I haven’t done any history checks about this particular subject recently but how many private citizens have assisted nations in rebuilding their cities? Especially nations that brag about their economic status in the world?
The efforts of one private U.S. citizen, namely Brad Pitt, to rebuild portions of New Orleans are admirable, to say the least. I wonder if our government – whether it be local, state or federal – views it the same way.
Brad is planning on building 150 eco-friendly homes in the Lower 9th Ward. I’ve heard that much of that property was slated for hotels and other types of expensive real estate properties though I haven’t been able to read and follow up to see if that is still the case.
I have often wondered if our government even wants the city rebuilt. It has just taken too long to get any action going there at all…
I haven’t been able to figure out what to believe and with the government dawdling with any efforts it makes me wonder even more.
There was some talk that the barriers were actually allowed to deteriorate so that when/if a flood happened it would wipe out that area. And then there was also some talk that the barriers were actually blown up. Maybe that’s just speculation and rumor… I wasn’t there. I don’t know.
But supposedly this was all because the area was wanted for “bigger and better” things and what was there (low income housing and residents) were preventing “real” growth. Again, rumors and speculation… I just don’t know.
I always liked New Orleans and it really broke my heart to drive through there after the hurricane. I have an affinity for the place so I would make the drive through instead of cutting around. If you like NO you know what I’m talking about – you never go around.
So back to Brad… I admire his efforts. I wish him a lot of luck in his project and I hope it all goes as planned and expected.
